Introduction: The UK Is Not Just Another European Market
When a CHC (Consumer Healthcare) brand decides to sell its products in the UK via e-commerce, the first temptation is to take existing content — content that performs well on Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, or American marketplaces — and translate it into English. After all, a magnesium supplement is a magnesium supplement, regardless of the country. The ingredients are the same, the dosage is the same, and the consumer is looking for the same thing: a reliable product that meets their health need.
This logic is seductive. It is also dangerous.
The UK online health market is a radically different environment from its European neighbours. Online sales of health products represent approximately 12% of total pharmacy sales in the UK — a figure that places the country well ahead of France or Germany in terms of healthcare e-commerce penetration. This mature digital adoption is supported by a structured market: established platforms (Amazon.co.uk, Boots, Superdrug, LloydsPharmacy), and British consumers who have long embraced online health purchases, particularly for over-the-counter medicines, food supplements, and medical devices.
However, this mature market is also one of the most regulated in Europe post-Brexit. The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency), the CMA (Competition and Markets Authority), the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority), and NHS England each regulate different aspects of product content — from health claims to visual presentation to sales conditions. Only pharmacies registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council can legally sell prescription-only medicines online. And the rules that apply to content are not the same as those in force in Germany, France, or the Netherlands.
